From the "I had no friggin' idea!" department:

The hilarious and adorable Jenna Fischer (Pam, on The Office) is married to James Gunn! Who is James Gunn? He wrote Tromeo and Juliet!

The two star together in a mockumentary Fischer put together a few years ago.
Jenna Fischer has a philanthropic side. With her writing-directing debut, a mockumentary called LolliLove, the actress best known to audiences as Pam, the sweet receptionist on NBC’s “The Office,” is proving she’s more than just a pretty face. And she’s taking her charity to the streets, providing Los Angeles’ homeless with the ultimate feel-good accessory: A lollipop.
Fischer is fantastic on The Office and Tromeo & Juliet is one of my favorite movies. I can't wait to see what these two have put together. On top of their talent, the Troma logo is always a sign that you're in for something...interesting.

Vidco's CopyCart is a holy grail for Atari 2600 VCS enthusiasts indeed. This unusual accessory allowed one to copy the contents of a cartridge onto another with the push of a button. This special cartridge could be used, erased and then reused.
The price tag says $19.95. I'm not sure if that's the original retail price. If it is, this thing was a steal of a deal.

This piece revists territory that is very familiar to Mr. Gondry: recursion and optical - rather than digital - effects. This video has strong connections to Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind as well as countless other Gondry shorts and videos. And yet, despite the familiar subject matter, the director manages to create something visually stunning and profoundly original.

A completely improvised "mega-collaboration" between Martin and Drew of Matmos and Keith Fullerton Whitman is available online now from Dublab. Keith says, "it's a big mess of clicky stereo freakouts, wandering sub-bass, muttered vocal-drones, atonal bleeps, completely gorgeous filtered drones, zonked modular-synth, and musique concrète with a nice almost Berlin-school ending worthy of 32:05 of your time.
Unfortunately, in addition to leaving out any method of downloading the individual mp3, they failed to include a feed address for the podcast. You're only provided an automated iTunes subscription button. This might just be the result of short-sighted web-design, but I have a strange feeling that this was deliberately limited. Fortunately, I figured out the regular feed information as well as the direct link to the mp3.

Zia is back in action. The latest incarnation of the band is based in Arizona and adds Aaron Lochart and Sean Brennan to the long list of outstanding artists who've worked with Elaine Walker over the years.

A new album has been completed and the band is playing its first gig in years next week in Temple, AZ.
ZIA is an exclusively electronic band who began performing around the New England in 1992. Founded by Elaine Walker, ZIA bangs out pro-space and sci-fi music on futuristic instruments. Microtonal musical scales run rampant throughout the ZIA repertoire. In the pop genre this is a monumental task which adds an eerie, futuristic edge to the songs.
The entire Zia dicography is available on line so head over to the Zia site, give it a listen and order a CD.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), chairman of the House intelligence committee, and Sen. "We have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons," Santorum said.
Americans should be especially proud that the chairman of the house intelligence committee was spewing this nonsense, too!

Dinello stops by and contributes to the interview as well. Apparently he helped Colbert write the White House speech.

Tromeo & Juliet 10 Years Later
POSTED ON 6/20/2006 | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK

The Troma team topped themselves once again with this willfully obnoxious circus of perversions, bodily fluids, obscenities, and classic literature. This is one of their better hybrids of jocularity and gore, with an amusing appropriation of the well-worn Shakespeare story that substitutes New York City for Verona and features the inspired touch of casting Lemmy from Motorhead as narrator. - All Movie Guide
Not just for Troma junkies. Troma and Juliet is sexy, silly, sweet and surreal! - USA Today

This is a genuinely entertaining and enduring film that outshines Troma's usual schlock. While many scenes in the film may offend viewers, this one is merely an offense to sanity. The scene features Will Keenan and WTG-mainstay Jane Jensen and is mildly nsfw due to nudity.

In addition to being funny, the film has a great soundtrack featuring the likes of Motorhead, Wesley Willis, Superchunk, The Ass Poneys, Sublime, Jane Jensen and Unsane.

Today's Eddie Vedder Is Much More Entertaining Than That Mopey "I Hate fame" Guy
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK

This naked-in-public anecdote from a recent Rolling Stone interview is rather amusing.
Vedder: I remember one day after a Lollapalooza gig, I woke up in a hotel in an army helmet and a T-shirt. And, I heard a live band playing. I thought it was a live band. So I went out the door to see if it was live. I had to know -- was that a real stand-up bass? Or were they just playing music in the atrium or whatever? So I pushed the door open, went to look, you know, and I looked back and the door just went [makes a clicking sound]. So I'm standing in the hotel, in this atrium thing and I've got an army helmet on and a T-shirt.

RS: In like your underwear? Nothing?

Vedder: Nothing; army helmet and a T-shirt. I was thinking, "Aww, this is really bad." And so I go down to the maids, but they won't let me in. I don't know anybody else's room number. Everyone's got a pseudonym. I don't know who's what. And, so I take the T-shirt off, wrap it around the back, put the army helmet over the front, go down in this glass elevator, it's Easter Sunday -- this all starts to hit me -- it's Easter Sunday, there's all these people in their Easter [best]. It was somewhere in the Midwest like Milwaukee or something. I had to walk through the people, and parents were hiding their kids from this freaky guy. It must have been like a real apparition. Then -- sorry I got into this story; I'll just finish it -- but the funny thing is that I actually waited in line. There was a line at the front desk. I actually waited in line behind two other people. It was kind of a Tarzan goes to Vietnam look or something. And then of course you get to the lady, tell her your problem, locked out of your room and, of course, she asks for an ID. That's when I lost it.

note: to be completely honest, i was right there being mopey with vedder in the mid-90s.

In 1986 Psychic TV unleashed “Godstar”, the theme to a film about Brian Jones (“the one of the Rolling Stones”). Apparently the film was never actually made, but we still have the song, a heartfelt and somewhat bitter ode to Brian:
Where were all of your laughing friends
Where were they at the bitter end
They started to steal your glory
They never even told your story

The instrumentation on the track deliberately mimmicks the style of some early Stones tracks, but the main guitar part is decidedly post-Jones.

If you've read this site for any length of time, you know about TiVo's HME apps. These are utitlies, games, etc. that run on your computer and add new features to the TiVo. What many people don't know about is the pseudo-unofficial apps.tv service. I say pseudo because it is run by a TiVo employee, but in an unofficial capacity.

While setting up HME apps on your PC can be time-consuming and highly irritating, setting up apps.tv couldn't be more convenient. Simply add 209.97.196.52 to the "music, photos and more" section of your TiVo and you're ready to go. The 100% free applications currently offered by apps.tv are:
    • Flickr
    • Hot Or Not
    • Last.fm (outstanding!)
    • Late Night Guide
    • MP3tunes Locker
    • PoneyPoker
    • SkullBones
    • Sokoban
    • Sudoku
    • Sudoku Solver
    • Tic-Tac-Toe
    • Word Droppings
    • Word Grid
Of course, these are in addition to the features already served up to all TiVo boxes, which include Yahoo tools, Live365 radio, podcasts, etc.

Made from coffee beans that are regurgitated by weasels. The beans are then harvested (picked up) to make this fine flavoured coffee. Don't believe us? Try it!
I can't decide if this is real or not. The product is real and available for sale, but I'm not sure as to the authenticity of the contents. I've repeatedly and randomly suffered outbursts of laughter since I read about it.
One of Vietnam’s domestic offerings, “weasel coffee,” has the potential to appeal to the palates of high-end drinkers the world over. Kay Johnson describes the colorful history of this drink in the Straits Times. Weasel coffee was originally made from coffee beans that had been eaten and excreted by weasels, enhancing the taste of the beans. A chain of coffee shops in Vietnam specializes in weasel coffee, although these days the beans never see a weasel’s insides, rather going through a synthetic process intended to simulate the effects of a journey through the weasel’s digestive tract. Apparently, it is as good as the real thing. While the owner of this chain has contemplated an international expansion of his business, citing possible franchises in Japan and New York City, the chain remains exclusively in Vietnam.

Amanda and Andrew from Rocketboom and is currently in beta . The show is designed for kids, but both episodes I've seen have thoroughly entertained me as well. By far, the best segment of the show is the "RSS Infinity + 1 News." I think they could spin that off into it's own program. Two adorable puppets that don’t talk down to kids, and might even be too smart for some of the adults out there, host the segment.

This isn't that "family-friendly" brand of entertainment that translates to "children's programming that doesn't make you want to stab yourself in the eye with a rusty fork." This is something that is going to make the whole family chuckle a few times while learning new things. Like Rocketboom, this program isn't for everyone. And that's the primary source of its charm. It's made for who it's made for. It'll ultimately gain a wide audience, but not by catering to the masses. It will succeed, like Rocketboom, by being true to itself.Filed in:

Let this serve as a warning. Other than the humble Andrew Barron of Rocketboom, the entire episode was full of ignorance, arguing and yelling. And an even higher dose of self-congratulation than usual. Calacanis fits right in.

Even Dvorak was annoying. He insisted that IPTV and vlogging are fundamentally different, somehow. Apparently Cranky Geeks is IPTV while so-called "vlogs" are doomed to fail. Nevermind that Rocketboom is the only one making it directly to the TV via TiVo. *sigh*

"I am extremely grateful for your support, no matter which format you choose to legally obtain my music in, so you should do whatever makes the most sense for you personally. But since you ASKED... I actually do get significantly more money from CD sales, as opposed to downloads. This is the one thing about my renegotiated record contract that never made much sense to me. It costs the label NOTHING for somebody to download an album (no manufacturing costs, shipping, or really any overhead of any kind) and yet the artist (me) winds up making less from it. Go figure."
Al is specifically referring to the iTunes music store. The Digital Music Weblog suspects he gets roughly $0.31 cents per song via CD sales, but only $0.045 on a digital download. I suspect he would do much better at eMusic. Unfortunately, that's not a decision he gets to make.

It looks like iTunes is an even worse deal for artists than it is for consumers.
