Behind The Beatles: Rain
POSTED ON 11/29/2005 | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
As far back as "Love Me Do," John and Paul had stumbled onto a novel use of spicy little trills and langorously stretched out melismas that, along with sung open and parallel fifths, is truly one of the more subtle trademarks of their early soun. Here, what is essentially the identical technique is pushed beyond the routine envelope to create an entirely new and exotically foreign effect.
"After we'd done the session on that particular song-- it ended at about four or five in the morning-- I went home with a tape to see what else you could do with it. And I was sort of very tired, you know, not knowing what I was doing, and I just happened to put it on my own tape recorder and it came out backwards. And I liked it better. So that's how it happened."

--John Lennon, 1966
Ringo has a veritable field day on the drums and cymbals throughout. Also, even on this relatively 'progressive' track, they take the time to bother with one of their so typically fussy tambourine parts; on all four beats in the intro, on alternate even-numbered beats in the first pair of verses and the refrains, and shaken on every eighth note of the measure in verses three and four.
"My favorite piece of me is what I did on 'Rain.' I think I just played amazing. I was into the snare and hi-hat. I think it was the first time I used the trick of starting a break by hitting the hi-hat first instead of going directly to a drum off the hi-hat. I think it's the best out of all the records I've ever made. 'Rain' blows me away. It's out in left field. I know me and I know my playing... and then there's 'Rain.'"

--Ringo, 1984
According to Paul McCartney, the band played the song faster in studio than it appears on the final release, and then slowied it down during post production to achieve the "gloopy" sound. Despite the "gloop," the song was one of the first to feature Paul's signature loud, booming basslines.

"Rain" is not featured on an original album and did not make it onto a compilation album until Hey Jude in the US and Rarities in the UK.

The song also introduced the world to the concept of music video. The band, sick and tired of performing/miming their hits on an endless sting of cheesy television programs, decided they would create promotional films instead.

Jennishow Episodes 16 & 17
POSTED ON 11/22/2005 | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK
More "classic" episodes of JenniShow. Long before vlogging had a name, Jenni of jennicam was doing just that. These are episodes 16 & 17 of her 45 (that I'm aware of) episode run. Research at the wayback machine (search for thesync.com) suggests that these episodes are at least 8 years old.

In episode 16, 'DC,' Jenni broadcasts from the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

In episode 17, 'JenniCon II,' Jenni invites friends and fans over, interviews them, and plays twister.

Some of these episodes are really only significant for their historical value. Others are genuinely interesting. I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which.

Behind The Beatles: Being For The Benefit of Mister Kite!
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |2 Comments | BOOKMARK
On January 31, 1967 the Beatles went to Knole Park near Sevenoaks in Kent to make the promotional film for Strawberry Fields Forever. "There was an antique shop close to the hotel we were using in Sevenoaks," remembers former Apple employee Tony Bramwell. "John and I wandered in and John spotted this framed Victorian circus poster and bought it."

Inspired by the finely-wrought language and the evocative names of the performers on the poster, John began to compose a song based on it.
The poster mentions "The Celebrated Horse Zanthus" (not Henry, the horse's name in the song), contains several references to the Hendersons, and advertises Mr. Henderson's "TRAMPOLINE LEAPS AND SOMERSETS! Over Men & Horses, through Hoops, over Garters and lastly through a Hogshead of REAL FIRE!"
Paul : 'Mr. Kite' was a poster that John had in his house in Weybridge. I arrived there for a session one day nad he had it up on the wall in his living room. It was all there, the trampoline, the somersets, the hoops, the garters, the horse. It was Pablo Fanque's fair, and it said 'being for the benefit of Mr. Kite', almost the whole song was written right off this poster. We just sat down and wrote it. We pretty much took it down word for word and then just made up some little bits and pieces to glue it together. It was more John's beacuse it was his poster so he ended up singing it, but it was quite a co-written song. We were both sitting there to write it at his house, just looking at it on the wall in the living room. But that was nice, it wrote itself very easily. Later George Martin put a fairground sound on it.
Although Lennon originally stated of the song that he "wasn't proud of that", in 1980, he described it as "pure, like a painting, a pure watercolour."

A total of 15 stereo and mono mixes were ultimately prepared. The background circus effects create more of a swirling sensation in the stereo version, but the mono version contains more tape loops.

Behind The Songs: Flaming Lips, Cake, Liz Phair
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
These aren't the greatest songs ever written, but you've heard them a million times. Now you'll be able to bore your friends with the stories behind them.

Wayne Coyne on "She Don't Use Jelly"
We used to do these silly experiments: You drink out of a glass of water, then you spit into the water and drink it. There would be this disconnect of, "Christ, I'm swallowing my own spit!" So I took that a little bit further. A lot of times people will use Vaseline on their lips because they don't have lip balm, but the idea of putting it on food and eating it repels them.

John McCrea on "Short Skirt/Long Jacket"
I think it was inspired by seeing somebody with those two oppositional fashion gestures. And that's sort of what the song is about, directly oppositional forces housed within the same mechanism or personage. I saw this woman as trying to arrive at balance -- the skirt going up and the jacket going down.

Liz Phair on "Divorce Song"
Every song I write is on various states of aloneness and togetherness, maybe because I'm adopted. Sometimes you're married and alone, or you're single and alone, wanting to be with someone. It's all about being and not being together . . . but I have no idea who the guy was.

Make your laptop or Mac Mini run faster, cooler, and last longer
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |4 Comments | BOOKMARK
Most people don't realize that most, if not all, laptop computers ship with very slow, very inefficient, and very loud hard drives. Most people don't realize that Apple's Mac Mini suffers from this problem as well.

When my laptop's drive died two years ago, I replaced it with a 60 gig drive from Hitachi that runs at 7200RPM (with 8MB cache) instead of 4200RPM or 3600RPM. The difference was noticable immediately. In addition to increased speed, the drive runs much cooler than traditional laptop drives and is as quiet as hard drives come. And, if that's not enough, it's also more energy efficient so you're battery will last a little longer as well.

If you want to breathe some new life into that aging laptop, or make that brand new Mac Mini perform like a real computer, you should probably think about picking one of these up. You can pop one into a tiny USB enclosure for a killer portable drive, too.

Behind The Beatles: Dear Prudence
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |2 Comments | BOOKMARK

An updated and improved version of this post is available here

"Dear Prudence" was written by John Lennon while the Beatles were in India visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Among other celebrities attending the ashram at the same time as the Beatles were singer/songwriter Donovan, Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Mia Farrow and her sister Prudence, who was having a difficult stay. Prudence wouldn't come out of her hut so John played his guitar and serenaded her with the song lyrics, Dear Prudence... won't you come out to play?

Perhaps the reason she didn't want to come out, is the alleged incident of sexual contact between the Maherishi and Mia. This reported "oneness", which was more corporal than spiritual, is also blamed for the Beatles sudden, and ill-humored departure from the ashram.

Tonight on GlitchTV: Confused Marketers
POSTED ON 11/13/2005 | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
Consuming Women (Women as Consumers) (1967): This looks like an excerpt from a longer 60s film aimed at marketing professionals which attempts to profile the “average woman.” A pretty but generic-looking model poses in various female roles, such as single women, wife, mother, secretary or little old lady, while the narrator tells us that “she” is all of those things, but mostly, “she’s a real person.” However, the female depictions shown are incredibly stereotyped and fake, leaving you with the impression that though the marketers of the time were trying to understand the needs and desires of women, they were horribly failing. The film ends with a bizarre sequence of the woman spending a lot of money for a gold-wrapped package, then looking horribly sad, which is an ironic image for a film supposedly showing women as consumers.

"That's mine. It's an interesting track. The guitars are great on it. That was written after an acid trip in L.A. during a break in the Beatles tour where we were having fun with the Byrds and lots of girls. Peter Fonda came in when we were on acid and he kept coming up to me and sitting next to me and whispering, 'I know what it's like to be dead.' He was describing an acid trip he'd been on. We didn't 'want' to hear about that. We were on an acid trip and the sun was shining and the girls were dancing, and the whole thing was beautiful and Sixties, and this guy-- who I really didn't know-- he hadn't made 'Easy Rider' or anything... kept coming over, wearing shades, saying, 'I know what it's like to be dead,' and we kept leaving him because he was so boring! And I used it for the song, but I changed it to 'she' instead of 'he.' It was scary... I don't want to know what it's like to be dead!"
