Below, Shelly Palmer talks a bit about Obama's perfectly produced convention speech. It's just the latest example of the campaign wildly exceeding the MSM's expectations.
The Obama campaign has long been on board those digital locomotives. Its ability to tell its story under the radar of the mainstream press in part accounts for why the Obama surge has been so often underestimated. Even now we’re uncertain of its size. The extraordinary TV viewership for Obama on Thursday night, larger than the Olympics opening ceremony, this year’s Oscars or any “American Idol” finale, may only be a count of the horses. The Obama campaign’s full reach online — for viewers as well as fund-raising and organizational networking — remains unknown.John McCain has certainly learned some of the internet's hollow campaign tricks (buying adsense keywords, putting sensational clips on youtube), but his digital media strategy is as bankrupt as the rest of his campaign. Obama's campaign is much more disciplined and has a greater understanding of how the subtleties of all media work together. He continues to be underestimated, and he continues to knock it out of the park. Meanwhile, the "maverick" continues to meet everyone's exact expectations. McCain is the status quo, even in campaigning. And Obama is anything but.

Kirn: Compared to the Dude, the typical superheros of our day feel less and less reassuring, and even ominous. Billionaire playboys who mask their true identities while turnigng themselves into gigantic armored flying boners aren't the solutions to violence, we sense, but embodiments of the traits that cause it.
The dudes approach to conquering evil was to let it conquor itself while he takes a bath or crashes on the sofa.

McCain Picks Newbie From Alaska? What Was He Thinking?
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments |
BOOKMARK
By picking Palin, McCain revealed his desperation to make a splash to rival the genuine excitement generated by the Obama campaign. But desperation leads to poor decisions -- and McCain's Hail Mary, like most last second desperation moves, is destined to fail miserably. He's smeared himself with the pungent mud of Alaska Republican corruption, while cutting the legs out from one of his most reliable attacks against Obama. And he's presented Americans with the prospect of electing a dangerous neophyte to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, behind a man whose life expectancy is less than two presidential terms. Why would McCain pick someone from a state so tied to Big Oil? Why would he pick someone who, like Alaska's Don Young and Ted Stevens, is under investigation for corruption? Why would he pick someone who thoroughly undermines his arguments against Obama? And why would he be so foolish as to confuse "a woman named Hillary" with "any woman"? This is really baffling.
To quote the first reaction of a Republican acquaintance in her mid 60's, "I don't want her holding the reins when he shuffles off this mortal coil."
Note: I'm generally not a Kos fan and I think the Quayle comparison is irrelevant.

"We're thrilled to report that the new PSYCHIC TV / PTV3 album "Mr. Alien Brain Vs. The Skinwalkers" will be released by Cargo/Sweet Nothing Records on October 20th, 2008. It will be a CD + DVD containing a featurette edited by filmmaker Marie Losier. More info to come, but wanted to share the great news...the cover art as wallpaper."While Psychic TV / Throbbing Gristle release dates have been completely divorced from reality in recent years, I am absolutely ecstatic about eventually getting my hands and ears on a brand new PTV3 record. The death of Lady Jaye led me to wonder if Gen would continue on with the band in the long term. Here's hoping that this is just the next step of PTV3 and not the last gasp.

Bill Moyers' Interview With Andrew J. Bacevich Should Be Required Viewing For Americans
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments |
BOOKMARK
Bill Moyers sits down with history and international relations expert and former US Army Colonel Andrew J. Bacevich who identifies three major problems facing our democracy: the crises of economy, government and militarism, and calls for a redefinition of the American way of life. "Because of this preoccupation with the presidency,” says Bacevich, “the president has become what we have instead of genuine politics, instead of genuine democracy." Respected across the political spectrum, Bacevich has contributed to The Nation, The American Conservative, Foreign Affairs, among others, and his latest book is The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism.

I recently watched this on my iPhone to pass the time on an exceptionally long train ride from NYC to Rhode Island. Bacevich delivers some hard truths that American citizens are unlikely to accept any time soon. While our willful ignorance and insistence on living beyond our means saddens me, it's heartening to know that a man of this stature is speaking up. I'll definitely pick up a copy of his book.

- Pageonce - Banking, bills, etc. all on your phone. This has the potential to be a killler app if they can add additional interactive functionality.
- Evernote - Incredibly useful note taking via text/voice/photo. Optical character recognition and versions for web/mac/win make for a universally useful tool.
- Beatmaker - Worth every penny of its $20 price. This feature-rich music composition/performance app shows how powerful the phone really is. And I get the feeling that this is only the beginning.
- NetNewsWire - Very basic free RSS reader that works even when you don't have signal. Somebody will improve on this (greader + google gears, please!), but you might as well stick with this free app until somebody does.
- NYTimes - It is friggin' awesome to have the entire NYT downloaded to your phone. Like NetNewsWire, it's a welcome source of information for those who find themselves without connectivity on a regular basis.
- the blip.tv <-> iphone hack
- the iphone is nice. but it's not revolutionary
- nyc students vs. the cell phone ban
- make a mellotron out of walkmans

Play Value cops the VH1 style (in a good way) and gives the history of videogames the focus it has always deserved. The Tetris saga is one of the most fascinating stories in the gaming history, which inevitably led to this being the show's best episode. Of course, that's not to say that the other episodes aren't fascinating as well.
And while we're on the subject, somebody finally released a free version of Tetris for the iPhone.

Aaron Sorkin Talks 'Sports Night'
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments |
BOOKMARK
Sports Night is one of my favorite TV shows and easily the most Sorkin-y show that was ever Sorkin-y (read: people walk and talk while repeating themselves and others). He spoke a bit about the show in a recent GQ article:"GQ: Sports Night ran for just two years. I gotta say, It always seemed like a weird fit for ABC.I already own the series on DVD, but I'm clearly going to have to buy the special edition set.
AS: Yeah. Sports Night was on right between The Drew Carey Show and Spin City. ABC would tell me, “You’re losing 20 percent of Drew Carey’s audience.” I would tell them, “I don’t think so. I think I’m losing 100 percent of Drew Carey’s audience.”
GQ: Sports Night ends with a classic line: “Anybody who can’t make money off of Sports Night should get out of the moneymaking business.” Zing!
AS: I’m not crazy about stepping outside the show and winking at the audience. But it felt good to write it. And the crew liked listening to it.
GQ: So much of Sports Night was about fathers. I remember watching one scene in which a dad rejects his son’s ringside seats to a boxing match because he thinks his kid is showing off, and thinking that had to have come from real life.
AS: Oh yeah. My father was an intellectual-property lawyer. He was born in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, fought in World War II on the GI Bill. The greasier side of this business turns him off. And ought to. My father is the reason why I tend to write as idealistically and romantically as I do. He is a guy who has one foot in the last century. He’s out to civilize people—but with great wit and humor."

Did you know that you can watch blip.tv video on your iPhone? All you have to do is add "/rss/ipod" or "/rss/itunes" to the end of a blip.tv show URL. So http://illdoctrine.blip.tv becomes http://illdoctrine.blip.tv/rss/ipod. You're just seeing the RSS feed, but it's a surprisingly convenient way to browse and view blip.tv shows.
Seperately, if you'd like to keep up with blip's latest "hot episodes" on your iPhone, you can use this URL: http://blip.tv/rss/itunes/?bookmarked_by=hotepisodes&pagelen=25.
Of course, blip.tv episode pages have always had a dropdown menu that lets you select from different file formats. This feature works perfectly well on the iPhone. This RSS method just makes it a little easier.

ABC News: Why did you link Anthrax To Iraq?
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments |
BOOKMARK
Glenn Greenwald says:
"The death of government scientist Bruce Ivins has generated far more questions about the anthrax attacks than it has answered. I want to return to the role the establishment media played in obfuscating the anthrax investigation for so long and, at times, aiding in what was clearly the deliberate deceit on the part of Government sources."Dan Kennedy says:
"ABC News has some explaining to do. The suicide of Bruce Ivins, a government scientist who's now being described as the principal suspect in the anthrax attacks that followed 9/11 (not that there's a whole lot of evidence), has prompted renewed scrutiny of ABC's sensational claim in October 2001 that the anthrax had been traced to Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq."Jay Rosen says:
"It now appears that the attacks were of domestic origin and the anthrax came from within U.S. government facilities. This leads us to ask you: who were the “four well-placed and separate sources” who falsely told ABC News that tests conducted at Fort Detrick showed bentonite in the anthrax sent to Sen. Tom Daschle, causing ABC News to connect the attacks to Iraq in multiple reports over a five day period in October, 2001?"(UPDATE) Scott Rosenberg says:
If you’re a reporter and you discover that your sources demanded anonymity because they were manipulating you or lying, you’re no longer under any obligation to protect them. In fact, the public good probably demands that you expose them.
