Icelandic Tourist Detained/Abused
POSTED ON 12/17/2007 | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK

This introductory paragraph doesn't even begin to describe what this woman went through:
"During the last twenty-four hours I have probably experienced the greatest humiliation to which I have ever been subjected. During these last twenty-four hours I have been handcuffed and chained, denied the chance to sleep, been without food and drink and been confined to a place without anyone knowing my whereabouts, imprisoned. Now I am beginning to try to understand all this, rest and review the events which began as innocently as possible."
Nobody is safe. Not one person on this planet is safe from the American government. Iraqis, Icelanders, Californians...we're all subject to this kind of abuse. Why aren't the presidential candidates asked about this stuff? Why isn't this woman's story on the news? Why doesn't anybody care about this?

Someone screwed up at Reykjavik. The screening should be done before they get on the flight, and the information should have been available to the airline/security screener at Keflavik, she should have been turned away at that point. I do not know how the screening is done there, and none of the articles on this incident are sufficiently detailed to indicate whose responsibility that aspect of the system is (Icelandic or U.S. State Department Visa division/DHS). If it is Icelandic personnel who failed to scrutinize the no admit system, or ignored its warning, no apology is necessary. Several of the 9/11 hijackers were in the U.S. on expired Visas - this is no joking matter.
