Mopsy, Flopsy, Tipsy and The American Idol

I'm not much of an American Idol fan. I hate "reality" tv. I hated Star Search. I hate teen pop star products. And I don't think watching contestants endure endless ridicule and embarrassment makes for good television.

That said, I did watch the last handful of American Idol episodes. There are two reasons for this.
  1. Taylor Hicks, the likely winner is the most unlikely American Idol contestant ever. This goofy guy sings Michael McDonald songs and has grey hair! But he's such a likable performer and personality that he's been adoringly parodied on SNL twice!
  2. Paul Abdul, once a talented choreographer (she choreographed all of those ridiculously awesome 80's ZZ Top moves!) and mediocre pop star, is an incredibly entertaining drunk! Her incoherent babbling caused me to laugh out loud more than a few times. Maybe she's just hopped up on botox. Who knows? The important thing is that it's fun to watch.
The Washington Post has a piece on last night's episode that is nearly as funny as Paula.

Taylor sings "Living for the City" and it once again sounds like a weak imitation of Stevie Wonder, only Taylor's wearing a puce velvet jacket, and any guy who has the nerve to wear a puce velvet jacket on national TV deserves our votes.

Mopsy says he made the song his own, which sounds as lame now as the first time he said it, oh so many "Idol" editions ago. Tipsy says she and Taylor match tonight, only she's wearing a skimpy little red, white and blue dress, so we have no idea what she's talking about, as usual.
