This 1998 interview with Genesis P-Orridge contains a lot of information that has been communicated countless times before. But, as usual, new tidbits are revealed and futher pieces of the puzzle falls into place. The interview is brief, but contains one the more concise explanations of what Throbbing Gristle and Industrial music were really all about. The statement is easy to make in hindsight, but that doesn't make it any less true.
"Burroughs used to say that writing is fifty years behind painting, and I always used to say that music is fifty years behind writing. So, perhaps what we did more than anything else with Throbbing Gristle was drag all the different threads into one place at one time and we updated it all and we just said, there’s been an industrial revolution, there is now technology. Playing an acoustic guitar and singing about the cottonfields is fine, but that’s not the entire human experience anymore."
