internet thought crime commission in obama's hands. can scoble read his mind?
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK

Online policing of politically unreliable web sites (Senate Bill S-1959) will bring to the US internet what Yahoo has already brought to China: Internet related censorship services and jailed dissidents.

Why is the internet tech community so quiet about this issue?

The bill, (S-1959) misleadingly called the Homegrown Terrorism and Violent Radicalization act of 2007 is a thought crime bill. The bill was passed in the house under a curious suspension of the rules usually reserved for non controversial issues like the naming of a post office.

A Senate Vote is imminent. Obama sits on the Senate committee responsible for moving it forward or sending it back to nazi Germany. As of December 27, 2007, Obama says he hasn't yet decided how he will vote.

Obama's presidential campaign has been encouraged to contact Robert Scoble for his advice. But what will Scoble say to Senator Obama when he calls?

What if Scoble has been pre-emptively compromised by a web2 business opportunity in the censorship solutions sector of Silicon valley? Maybe Dave Winer can give Scoble a short tutorial on creeping fascism.

This dangerous bill is being pushed by the Pentagon through it's favored think tank, the Rand Corporation. If passed it will be another step toward creating an internet policing apparatus complete with watch-lists and user profiles and all the follies associated with the suppression of civil liberties online.

If you thought net neutrality was not high on the agenda you haven't read this bill (S-1959)

violet blue turns in the year's best lolcats reference
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
I never really got into the whole lolcats thing, but Violet Blue made me burst out laughing while reading this gem on the subway the other day. This is an excerpt from her 12/13/07 post titled "my december in pr0n":
"9. Born in a Barn The director of this documentary sent me a copy, and it's a pretty amazing doc on human animal pony play -- the real stuff, not just the glammy girls in rubber bridles and hooves that populate the internet ponyverse. I just made that phrase up. I can haz sugarcube?"
Perhaps I'm the only person who laughed out loud in response to that, but it stuck with me to the point that I actually remembered to post it to wtg days later...

the end of anacam?
POSTED ON 12/18/2007 | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
It looks like Ana Voog's grand internet art/life/cam project is slowly winding down after more than ten years in operation. I'm hoping her seemingly irrepressible drive to photograph/paint/knit/dance/perform/write/sing will keep her from disappearing from our lives altogether. If not, I hope she'll at least reverse her recent practice of removing journals/images/etc. from the net.

Icelandic Tourist Detained/Abused
POSTED ON 12/17/2007 | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK

This introductory paragraph doesn't even begin to describe what this woman went through:
"During the last twenty-four hours I have probably experienced the greatest humiliation to which I have ever been subjected. During these last twenty-four hours I have been handcuffed and chained, denied the chance to sleep, been without food and drink and been confined to a place without anyone knowing my whereabouts, imprisoned. Now I am beginning to try to understand all this, rest and review the events which began as innocently as possible."
Nobody is safe. Not one person on this planet is safe from the American government. Iraqis, Icelanders, Californians...we're all subject to this kind of abuse. Why aren't the presidential candidates asked about this stuff? Why isn't this woman's story on the news? Why doesn't anybody care about this?

'alive in baghdad' correspondent killed in his home
POSTED ON 12/15/2007 | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
From the AIB blog:
The morgue report says that Ali took 31 bullets between the chest and the head and died immediately. He will be missed and remembered. His two brothers were killed in the Firdos Square bombing in 2005. He is survived by his mother and sister.
I don't know that I have it in me to comment on this right now. It's just sad. Really sad. But it did make me think of this video:

My heart goes out to Brian, Steve and the rest of the AIB crew. I know they're taking this really hard. I donated money for Ali's funeral fund, and I ask that you do the same if you can. Find out how via the link below...

Gary V takes on the wine snobs and shows that wine in a box can be a very good thing (if it doesn't smell like a shoe). Gary, Like Mark Molaro, continue to prove that web video doesn't have to stick to the 3-5 minute format to be popular.

In this episode, Trav S.D. moderates a roundtable about contemporary burlesque. (Trav S.D. says the table is not only round but curvaceous.)

Our guests are three of NYC’s burlesque scene’s biggest stars: Bonnie Dunn, Julie Atlas Muz, and Nasty Canasta. Each of these ladies shares insights about her own career and her views of how burlesque has evolved into a sophisticated live entertainment form.

Meditation Enhances Attention
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK

Neuroscientists discover a specific example of how meditating can give you the ability to notice things that non-meditators can't:

When you're concentrating on something and miss something else that should be obvious, that's the attentional blink. New research shows that meditators can avoid this gap in perception.

Naomi Klein Interview on The Alcove
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
Another fascinating interview from Mark Molaro's excellent show.

In-depth interview with internationally renowned author, journalist and syndicated columnist Naomi Klein on her new book “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism”. Klein is best known for her book from the year 2000, the international bestseller “No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies”. It was called “A Movement Bible” by the New York Times referring to its incredible impact on the anti-globalization movement.

In this extraordinary interview, Klein discusses the key ideas behind her concept of The Shock Doctrine and its importance as an alternate economic, social and political history of the last thirty years. She describes how the free market ideas of economist Milton Friedman and the Chicago School fostered the impact of shock from the 1970s Pinochet regime in Chile to the Bush administration today.
